Iraq snapshot

Saturday, December 17, 2016.  Chaos and violence continue, the Mosul slog continues, Paul Krugman epitomizes the Empty Whore Democrat, and much more.

Vestal Virgin Paul Krugman sputters and claws at Barack -- not for illegal spying, not for failing to end the Iraq War, no because War Hawk Hillary lost the election.

I gather that Obama just wimped out, bigly. Sad!

Safely locked in an iron maiden of his own making, Paul's always got a f**ked up view of the world.

Donald Johnson (MONDO WEISS) notes something Paul leaves out in his endless attacks on Bernie Sanders supporters:

Foreign policy. American militarism. American support for thuggish allies. The utter catastrophe of US foreign policy in the Middle East. Sanders has been bad, but Clinton has been much worse, supportive of the Iraq invasion (which in a just world would have much of America’s political class on trial for war crimes), supportive of Israel, mocking Obama in 2008 for saying he wanted to talk to Iran. I assume she supports the Obama policy of helping the Saudis as they commit war crimes in Yemen. And by the way, is there any bigotry involved in our support for Israel when they bomb civilians? Or does that not count?
Has Krugman mentioned any of this? Yeah. Blink and you could miss it.
Clinton’s support for the Iraq invasion? Oopsie. It was a “special” time, as he says in a parentheses. Yeah, a massive terrorist attack, public hysteria, and cynical people with an agenda use this as an excuse to invade a country which had nothing to do with it, killing hundreds of thousands, creating millions of refugees, and creating a situation where jihadism can thrive. And why did Clinton and some other centrist liberal Democrats support this? Maybe some of the corrupting forces of bigotry and money cross party lines.

Paul always turned a blind eye to Iraq.

Especially when he was silent during the long, long leadup to the Iraq War.

He didn't oppose the Iraq War because he's an empty whore Democrat -- just like Hillary.

The Empty Whore Democrat voted for the Iraq War because they were worried they wouldn't look 'tough' for the 2002 elections.

The Empty Whore Democrat has no spine and doesn't believe in ethics.

They are a good reason why the Iraq War continues to this day.

As the Iraq War continues, a leader steps forward to call for the end of it.

Sadly, the leader is not in the White House.  Sadly?  Maybe tellingly.

The leader is Moqtada al-Sadr.  ALSUMARIA reports that the Shi'ite cleric and movement leader has called for an end to the war in Iraq and for an end to the war in Syria.

ALSUMARIA reports that Iraq's Prime Minister Hayder al-Abadi delivered a speech to Iraq's various ambassadors insisting that the operation to liberate (or 'liberate') Mosul was going at a good pace.  ALL IRAQ NEWS notes that he not only claimed a good pace but also insisted he'd heard no reports of any abuses.  He must spend a lot of time with his fingers in his ears.

It's day 61 of the Mosul operation, day 61 of the slog with no end in sight.

Doctors Without Borders notes:

As the Battle of Mosul intensifies the number of people forced from their homes increases, and it is estimated that more than 90,000 people living in the city and the surrounding area have been displaced.
In October, MSF opened a surgical field hospital 30 kilometres [about 18 miles] north of Mosul, offering life-saving surgery for severely wounded patients for whom even the closest hospitals are too far. Most of the patients admitted had gunshot or shrapnel injuries. The team has also established a stabilization point close to the frontline at the north of the city—where critical patients are stabilized before being transferred to hospital. MSF plans to open more stabilization points close to other front lines around the city.
In Qayyarah, to the south of Mosul, MSF opened an emergency room and in-patient department in a primary healthcare centre, in early December. The MSF teams provide surgical and emergency medical care, and in the first week alone, received 250 patients.

As fighting in Mosul escalates, MSF's mobile clinic teams in Erbil—who provide general and mental health consultations—have expanded their reach to those who have recently arrived the Khazer and Hasansham displacement camps. Both camps provide refuge for more than 18,000 people who fled Mosul after the Iraqi army launched an offensive to take back the city from ISIS, in October.

The White House periodically claims 'success' in the ongoing war by noting how many members of the Islamic State they have allegedly killed.

Alternative headline: U.S estimates it has killed 200% of its 2014 estimate of strength with unknown percentage still remaining.

Today, the US Defense Dept announced:

Strikes in Iraq
Fighter, rotary and remotely piloted aircraft and rocket artillery conducted three strikes in Iraq, coordinated with and in support of the Iraqi government:

-- Near Mosul, two strikes engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed six ISIL-held buildings, two fighting positions, two heavy machine guns and a front-end loader.

-- Near Rawah, a strike destroyed two bunkers.

Task force officials define a strike as one or more kinetic events that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative, effect. Therefore, officials explained, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone ISIL vehicle is one strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against buildings, vehicles and weapon systems in a compound, for example, having the cumulative effect of making those targets harder or impossible for ISIL to use. Accordingly, officials said, they do not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target. Ground-based artillery fired in counterfire or in fire support to maneuver roles is not classified as a strike.

As the bombings continue, Americans -- especially trash celebrities like Alyssa Milano and Debra Messing -- pour their heart into reTweeting about Syria.

Iraq?

Not a concern for them at all.

  1. Twitter's heart does not break for Mosul

In office for over two years, Hayder al-Abadi is now saying 'soon.'  ALL IRAQ NEWS reports that Hayder is insisting that after (when?) Mosul is finally liberated, a community reconciliation project will be started.

only cuz we Sunnis civilians Iraqi government dealings with us as hostages As prisoners of war We have no rights

ALL IRAQ NEWS notes that National Alliance head (and head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq) Ammar al-Hakim insists some settlement project will take place after (when?) Mosul is liberated.

In other violence, ALSUMARIA notes a west Baghdad roadside bombing near a rations store left many people injured, a Kirkuk roadside bombing left 1 person dead and eleven more injured, an Abu Saida roadside bombing killed 1 militia member and left two more injured, and a bombing target an oil pipeline south of Baghdad.
